Captain Arthur Phillip was born in Fulham, London on 11th October 1738 and died in 31st August 1814 in Bath, England. Arthur Phillip proved to everyone that he was a good leader. He was in the British Navy but he retired to be a farmer. He rejoined the navy in 1778 and he was a spy in French ports. On the 12th October 1786 he was chosen to be the first governor of N.S.W. He helped the convicts survive in N.S.W and he was the only man capable of being the colonial secretary.
Arthur Phillip at times did have trouble with his men aboard the ship especially when they first set sail but he soon got them under control. The First Fleet had to go through some really bad weather during their trip to get to Australia. On the way Captain Arthur Phillip stopped the ship three times to pick up supplies for their new colony. There were more than 500 animals and birds and they even had chickens. Phillip went onto the fastest ship, the HMS Supply, on the 12th of October. He went ahead to find the best place to stop, which was Botany Bay. He anchored the ship and waited for the rest of the fleet before going on the land.
Captain Arthur Phillip was the man who named "Sydney" after the British home secretary. Phillip didn't know that the job was going to be so big setting up a new colony. The equipment which they bought with them from England wasn't very good for the harsh conditions of the land. It was very hard to grow plants and so for over two years they kept trying but ended up using all the supplies.
There were lots of problems in olden days. The children had to work all day and they only got a little food. If they did something wrong then they get punishments. Punishments were getting hanged, no food, cat o nine tails etc. Sometimes I really feel sorry for those people because they didn't have enough food and more and more people were getting sick and THE CHILDREN WERE ALSO THE ONES TO GET SICK!!!! Life for them would have been very, very hard. There was another problem. A big one actually! In the ship there were lots of dirt, unclean water and chalky puddles and stuff like that and that's why the people got sick very quickly because that caused disease. Remember when I told you about the big people had lots of work well they did do lots of work but hey also had to help build the British Settlement.
For farming he set up Parramatta in 1788. Parramatta soon became the main centre of the business. He set up building program and built the first government house. Within six weeks after the First Fleet came at Port Jackson, Governor Arthur Phillip hoped that they find much better land than was at Sydney Cove. He went to Broken Bay and explored Brisbane Water on the 2nd of March and then went to Hawkesbury. Some convicts had a disease called "small-pox" which to the Aborigines and it killed the aborigines very quickly.
In 1790 Captain Arthur Phillip requested that if could go back to England because of all the illness and guess what he did! Even though it was very hard to live because of the starvation he still managed to survive. In December 1792 he got into a battle with the aborigines.
He retired after 5 years and returned to England. Three years later, after he had recovered Arthur Phillip rejoined the Navy. He promoted to the rank of the Admiral just before his death in 1814.
He was a kind and respectful man and he was fair to everyone. He treated the aborigines fairly and he said he was a "guest" of the aborigines. When food was stunning out he said everyone should have the same amount of food, whether they were a convict or in charge.
